Everyone has the right to a safe workplace. Yet a quarter of employees in the Netherlands face discrimination, bullying, (sexual) harassment, or aggression.
What is inappropriate behaviour?
If you feel uncomfortable about behaviour that is unwanted and for which you have not given consent, we call that inappropriate behaviour. It causes you harm physically, mentally, or emotionally. Think, for example, of discrimination, bullying, (sexual) harassment, and aggression. The perpetrator can be a colleague or manager, but also a guest or supplier. It is incredibly difficult to report or discuss inappropriate behaviour, especially if the perpetrator has more power than you.
Inappropriate behaviour can affect anyone, but it is more common among young people, women, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with a migration background, and people with disabilities. You are also at greater risk of inappropriate behaviour if you do not have a permanent contract.
What can you do if you encounter inappropriate behaviour?
It is important to raise the alarm quickly if you are experiencing inappropriate behaviour yourself or if you notice it happening to one of your colleagues. Our colleagues at the FNV have a comprehensive page [link] with tips on what to do if you encounter inappropriate behaviour or if you are accused of it.
Whistleblowers' Protection Act
Since 18 February 2023, the Whistleblowers' Protection Act has been in effect. This law replaces the House for Whistleblowers Act. The law makes it easier and safer to report a wrongdoing and protects you from retaliation.
If you work at a company with at least 50 employees (including hired staff, volunteers, and interns), an internal reporting procedure is mandatory. Find more information at huisvoorklokkenluiders.nl.
