"Without a union, there is no fair playing field"
Martien de Haan, member of the supervisory board
Martien de Haan (1962) has been a member of De Horecabond since 1987 and has long been active in various areas, from CLA committee member to company contact person. He now holds the position of general board member of the supervisory board.
At the age of 16, Martien started with a part-time job in a bistro on Monday evenings. After that, he worked as a chef in various places in the sector, including à la carte kitchens, party catering, and several large hotels. Currently, Martien is working as an independent chef within catering. Altogether, he has been working in the hospitality and catering industry for over 40 years.
In your opinion, what is the most important quality a member of the supervisory board should possess?
“In my opinion, the most important quality is that he is a bridge builder between the members and the union. He knows what is happening on the work floor, but also how boards function and what challenges they may face. A bridge builder is positively critical and knows how to connect, but is also an independent thinker and dares to think outside the box.”
What do you want to focus on during the upcoming four-year board term?
“I want to focus on involving our active cadre members even more in the internal communication process to keep them even better connected with the board."
What makes you happy?
“My family. When I am sufficiently challenged in my work. But also my union work, which has partly shaped and made me happy all these years. Furthermore, I am happy cycling in our beautiful polder with its lovely views. And if there is natural ice, of course, making beautiful skating trips through our Dutch polders and over the inland waterways and lakes.”
What is your motto?
“Without a union, there is no healthy playing field between employee and employer interests.”
