Who is at the negotiating table?

17-09-2024

In recent months, we have been preparing for the negotiations for a new hospitality CLA starting on 1 January 2025. We are very pleased that thousands of hospitality employees have completed our survey, giving us a good understanding of what is happening and what matters to you.

The top priority is a fair pay rise. This is followed by tackling workload in combination with a better work-life balance, and thirdly, allowances. It is also great to see that the agreements from the CLAs of 2022-2023 and 2024, such as timely announcement of schedules, two consecutive days off, and limiting overtime, are working well in practice. That’s what we do it for!

We have already had the first informal meeting with Koninklijk hospitality Nederland (KHN) and negotiations will start on 1 October 2024. We will do our utmost to conclude a good CLA that meets the wishes and needs of hospitality employees. I find it important that with each CLA we continue to improve working conditions, so that hospitality remains a profession you enjoy working in and where you receive appreciation. I am fully committed to this 100%!

And I am not doing this alone. Together with my colleague Edwin Vlek and CLA committee member Frank van den Berk, we ensure that the voice of the hospitality employee is heard at the negotiation table!

Since 2018, I have been negotiating on behalf of FNV hospitality for the CLA in hospitality. In recent years, we have achieved great successes and improved the CLA in various areas. This year, we want to continue that trend, but it will be quite a challenge.

Due to the strong increase in the statutory minimum salary (WML), there is an imbalance in the salary scales of the CLA. Starting employees in the lowest salary scales earn almost the same as someone who has been in the profession longer and/or performs a more demanding role. With the CLA for 2024, we have largely restored that balance, but because the WML has risen again as of 1 July 2024, we face the challenge once more to ensure that experience is properly rewarded. Our survey shows that 94% of hospitality employees find this important. A clear signal that we will act upon.

Together with our CLA committee, we will make an appropriate salary proposal that better rewards experience. Because not only for you, but also for us, it is important that working in hospitality continues to pay off. While keeping an eye on everyone in the sector: young, old, experienced or starter.

I am going to work hard for this. And I hope you will join me, together we are stronger and achieve more!

Dear fellow hospitality pros,

Let me introduce myself. My name is Frank van den Berk, working as a Head Chef at a beautiful restaurant at a golf course in Brabant.

I have been a member of de horecabond for 16 years, the last 5 years as an active CLA committee member. From this role, I have been chosen as an observer during the upcoming CLA negotiations in hospitality. It is a great honour for me to be chosen and to represent all hospitality stars during the negotiations.

My role during the negotiations will mainly consist of translating agreements and rules from the CLA to the business world. Explaining the consequences that some rules or obligations have if you change them on the shop floor. A very good example is an agreement we retained last year during the then negotiations: 3.3. Duty and work schedule. The employer announces that schedule at least 3 weeks in advance.

The employers' organisation was sceptical about this and only saw problems that it was difficult to make this schedule technically feasible. They wanted to revert to 2 weeks in advance. From my role as an observer and position as Head Chef (where I also schedule), I could very well explain that this is indeed possible and that I even schedule further in advance than what we have now agreed.

I am really looking forward to the negotiations and am very excited. We are once again going to make an effort to make our sector a little more beautiful and future-proof.

Together we work hard for a beautiful sector!
