Young people eat in a restaurant most often

Younger people, the so-called Millennials (18-36), dine out most frequently. 29 per cent of them eat out at least once a week. However, these same young people are looking for cheaper solutions. The average expenditure per restaurant visit is 19.42 euros. This is according to research by the FoodService Institute Netherlands (FSIN).

The group aged between 37 and 50 spends an average of 32.99 euros on a restaurant visit. The so-called Baby Boomers (51-70) pay 30.66 euros per person. Those aged 70 and over pay 29.29 euros.

The recently published research conducted by research agency Q&A for the FSIN shows that young people do not think in terms of channels when it comes to their food purchases. ‘Young people do less weekly shopping and only decide at the last moment what they want to eat, how they want to eat, and where they will do so. They buy and eat everywhere, just as much in the supermarket as in trendy restaurants or hybrid forms thereof. This trend started in American cities but is also reaching our country. ‘That’s why blurring will grow significantly,’ says FSIN director Jan-Willem Grievink.
