Negotiating salary is something few people enjoy doing; it is often even uncomfortable. Yet, negotiating happens more often in the workplace than you might think. Negotiating in the form of salary discussions, but also with clients and suppliers.

Salary, expense allowance, travel allowance or training, all conditions you can negotiate during your job interview. Often an employer wants to save on costs, but they do want you as an employee. You would like a good salary along with a pleasant employer and an enjoyable job. A good negotiation offers the solution that satisfies both you and your employer.

If you have been working somewhere for a while and haven't had a pay rise, but you have grown, it is possible to negotiate your salary. This can be daunting, but it is possible! When negotiating, it is important to be well-prepared. Look into the economic position of the company and know what you are talking about. This way, you can better sense if it is possible. Of course, you can also negotiate secondary employment conditions instead of your salary.

Here are a few tips:

    • Preparation = half the work
    • Check the salary appropriate for the role
    • Sense what is possible within the organisation/market
    • Give and take
    • Be clear: why do you want more salary?
